BARC (Govt. of India) has developed Ultra filtration Membrane technology water purifiers. Nirmal Aqua purifies all physical, chemical & microbiological impurities. The membrane (polysulfone material) filtration process in which the porosity is 0.01 micron that eliminates bacteria & Viruses. Along with it, activated carbon functions by removing complete odor, color & other chemical impurities that are highly dangerous & toxic for human health.
In the UV based water purifiers only the DNA of bacteria is deactivated & it cannot kill the viruses the decayed bacteria & turbidity remain in the UV treated water. As far as the reverse osmosis process is concerned, the water purifiers which use this technology remove even the total minerals & salt.

Devices based on Ultra filtration Membrane can physically remove, bacteria, suspended solids and high molecular weight organics without the use of electricity, at tap water pressure, mainly by sieving ( size-exclusion)) mechanism. Useful life of this membrane device depends on configuration of membrane. Most of the existing membrane devices employ UF membrane in either spiral, capillary or hollow fibre form. Draw back with these configurations is that they can not be completely cleaned physically and due to deposition of suspended solids, their output keeps on decreasing with time. On line domestic water purifier developed at Desalination Division, BARC is based on this ultra filtration membrane in cylindrical configuration which is free from these limitations.
UF Membrane separate the species from effluent/water based on size exclusion mechanism. These membranes have the pore sizes in the range of 2-100 nanometers (nm), depending upon type of polymer and procedure used for fabrication of these membranes. Since these membrane pore sizes are much smaller than the sizes of bacteria (500- 3000 nm) , these membranes can be used as an absolute barrier to filter out bacteria and suspended solids. By coupling this with an activated charcoal column, other contaminants like colour, odour, organics and residual chlorine also can be removed from water supplied for domestic consumption.
